In-depth analysis of Redmi AirDots,
This is Redmi AirDots by Xiaomi, and it is a true wireless earphone at a low-price tag. I’ve been using these earbuds for nearly 8 months now and I think it’s time to review it for you.
First of all, Redmi AirDots starts at around 16 USD (3000 LKR) which is a pretty affordable price for true wireless earbuds.
These are wireless earbuds, and a charging case comes with the buds, and it has a micro-USB port for charging. When the charging case has some juice, you can put the earbuds in there and charge it up.
Specifications
Let’s get into some specifications,
- AirDots has lithium polymer batteries, 300 mAh for the charging case and 40 mAh for each earbud.
- It’s got 7.2mm drivers inside the earbud to deliver a quality audio experience.
- Has Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity for better range, low latency audio and overall better connectivity.
- Comes with three different sized extra ear tips.
Design and Build Quality
Since these are low-cost earbuds, cannot nitpick everything. Let’s take a look at details relating to the design and build quality,
- When you’re using the Airdots, you can feel it’s hollow and cheap, mostly because of the charging case feels a little cheap and the earbuds itself feels pretty cheap too.
- The entire package has minimalistic design language, and the charging case is entirely made up of plastic and is prone to scratches, this scratches easily.
- The opening and closing mechanism are fine but sometimes you can hear, there’s a creak to it.
- The great thing about the earbuds is, they won’t fall out on their own, because it has a secure magnetic fit.
- The design and especially the size is really good. Size of the case is good and it’s pocketable and earbuds also have a good size, they are not huge and sticking out from your ears, they stay nice and steady.
- Earbud feels average, there are two buttons in each bud and they kind of wobbles and in my case right earbud button wobbles more and let’s say you’re running, then you can hear the music and the wobbling sound of the button which is annoying.
- I haven’t dropped these buds but there are some cases after a single drop this plastic breaks easily. So, don’t drop it. So, there you have it, overall build quality is average, but it’s a very affordable product and convenient.
The Fit and Comfort
Alright, let’s talk about the fit and comfort of the earbuds,
- Actually, the fit is good, it fits perfectly in my ears and it’s not big or anything like other similar products in this price category.
- Also, it’s lightweight and won’t fall off from my ears even if I shook my head like a lunatic. So, there’s nothing to worry about using these while running or when working out.
- These are not the most comfortable earbuds; I think it’ll be fine with most and I can wear these for hours without an issue. Okay, here’s something, I feel it’s kind of getting hot when using.
- It’s not that much annoying but it’s definitely there. And if you take out earbuds in the middle of charging, you can feel the heat quite a bit. But it’s normal, charging always generates heat. But it kind of heats up while using it.
Connectivity
Connectivity is very critical for true wireless earphones,
- It’s got Bluetooth 5.0 support as I mentioned and connection range is around 10 meters, actually range is quite good in these AirDots.
- The pairing process is pretty easy, we have to take out the right earbud from charging case and a white LED start blinking on the earbud and that means it’s ready to connect.
- If the buds have a full charge, it will turn on automatically. Otherwise you have to press the button on the bud to turn it on.
- Then you have to turn on Bluetooth on your device and it will show Redmi Airdots, and done you’re connected After the connection is established, white LED will go off then you can take the left earbud, it will automatically connect with the right bud, and you have the stereo audio. But it takes 1 to 2 seconds to sync.
- It seems like a lot. But it really is a very easy pairing process once you get used to it. I never had pairing related issues with these earbuds.
The buttons have some functions,
- Long press turns on the earbud,
- Short press can answer a phone call,
- Double press activates voice assistant.
I kind of like if it skips the song like a normal earphone, but it only activates voice assistant and I had to reach for my phone every time when I needed to skip the song or to change the volume. Which by the way sucks…
AUDIO QUALITY & CALL PERFORMANCE
- These AirDots sound isolation is quite good, it comes from the good fit in the ear. These have 7.2mm drivers inside as I mentioned before. At this price point, we should not expect great audio quality, but these sound just fine, not great.
- For normal usage scenarios, these are pretty good sounding earbuds, the bass is good enough and mids delivers fine, the highs are little bit rattling, but it gets pretty loud. So overall sound experience is good.
When considering call performance,
- It gets the job done indoors but if you’re in outside trying to make a call it’s pretty bad.
- These earbuds have inbuilt microphones and most of the time, if the environment is noisy, it won’t perform well. It has a tendency to amplify the ambient sound not our voice so, the person on the other side may complain that they can’t hear you properly.
- Okay pro tip, there is a simple trick which I used when I couldn’t reach my phone, I remove the right earbud from my ear and kept it closer to my mouth while listening to the other person from the left earbud. That way my voice became clearer, and it really works.
BATTERY LIFE
In a wireless earphone, battery life mostly defines the user experience with the device,
- The charging case has a 300mAh battery and each earbud has 40 mAh batteries inside.
- Xiaomi claims both combined they deliver 12 hours of music playback time. In practical usage scenarios, I found that fully charged earbuds last about 3 and a half hours and after it hits 20% you get a voice alert saying battery is low.
- The case can be charged by using a micro-USB cable and it takes up to 2 hrs. to get fully charged. After the voice alert Earbuds turn off automatically and you have to put it in the case to charge it again.
- When you put the earbuds into the slots correctly, you can see a Red LED light which is indicating that it’s charging, and it goes off as soon as the earbuds are fully charged.
CONCLUSION
Okay finally let’s talk about pros and cons of this earbuds,
Things I like about Redmi AirDots, these are true wireless earbuds and there will be,
No tangled cables running around your neck, no cable breaking concerns, Easy to carry around, sound quality is fine, has a charging case which is like a power bank for your earbuds and value for money is great.
Things I don’t like about the Redmi AirDots are, they feel cheap, build quality could be a little better, need to charge this every day and there’s a little lag in the playback you can clearly experience it while gaming.
So, I hope you got a good idea about Redmi AirDots and if you came this far, leave a comment and share with your friend who’s planning to buy an earphone these days. Thank you… 🙂 Click Here to read more about in-depth analysis by soundphile reviews.
