Elon Musk is threatening to ban Apple devices at his companies along with Apple’s new OS update.
The CEO of Tesla, SpaceX, Boring Company and XAi is threatening to ban Apple devices from his companies if Apple integrates with Open AI for its Apple Intelligence due to privacy and security concerns of data safety.
Yesterday Apple announced at its WWDC that they will be integrating their new intelligence software “Apple Intelligence” with Open AI. This includes iPhones, iPads, and Macs.
Apple also mentioned that they are partnering up with Open AI to integrate ChatGPT powered by gpt4o along with some of their software. Apple being one of the biggest tech companies in the world, it is kind of absurd that they have not yet developed their own AI and integrated it in iOS as a more secure option.
Elon Musk was already having a beef with Open Ai, which he co-founded as an open source, non-profit organization. After Sam Altman took control and made it a closed-source and for-profit organization, then sold for 10 billion dollars to Microsoft. After that, the beef grew between tech tycoon Elon Musk and Open AI CEO Sam Altman and Musk has sued Sam Altman for the incident.
Elon Musk has shared few tweets regarding Apple’s announcement of partnership with Open AI and pointed out there is a high risk of data safety from this decision even though Apple claims high security.
Elon Musk is also stating that visitors will have to check their Apple devices at the door, where they will be stored in a Faraday cage.
When considering the previous incidents with Open AI, the company is not the most reliable and transparent. Even after the legal action taken by Elon Musk, actress Scarlette Johansson also sued Open AI for mimicking her voice. (Scarlett Johansson was asked by Sam Altman to voice the AI voice Sky but after she refused, Open AI created the Sky to sound exactly like the actress)
Bigger picture, it is actually unacceptable for Apple to partner up with Open AI while being the biggest and most resourceful tech company. Siri was not smart for long period of time and Google Assistant was much superior, even Apple did not create an AI which can actually be controlled by them and not from some third-party company where its track record is not acceptable to handle millions of Apple user data.
It is time for Apple to create their own AI or to rely on a third party to handle AI tasks. Currently the latter is not a great future, and the data will be much more secure and controlled inside an Apple developed AI.
